Zohan Dvir works as a Special Agent and lives with his orthodox parents in Israel. He wants to give up this life full of dangerous encounters with Palestinians. While in the process of apprehending a Palestinian activist known simply as the Phantom, he fakes his death, hides in a dog-kennel on a plane bound for New York, and decides to try his hand as a hair-stylist. He is refused employment initially, but when he offers to work for free, Dahlia hires him as a cleaner. When a hair-stylist named Debbie quits, Zohan replaces her, winning over elderly female clientèle, and falling in love with Dahlia herself.

Claude Bolling (born 10 April 1930), is a renowned French jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and occasional actor.

Steve Allen, who was most famous as one of the great standup comedians and talk show hosts, enjoyed writing songs. Of the thousands that he penned, only "It Could Be the Start of Something Big" made it to become a standard. Tom Kubis arranged 36 of Allen's better songs for his big band, recording two CDs of which this was the first one. Kubis' charts always swing and they certainly uplift Allen's obscure songs, giving them plenty of life. With such soloists as trombonists Andy Martin, Charlie Morillas, Alex Iles, and Rich Bullock, trumpeters Ron Stout, Stan Martin, George Graham, and Jeff Bunnell, and Kubis on tenor, flute, and soprano, there are plenty of fine individual moments throughout the spirited set. Steve Allen makes a guest appearance, singing "The Girl Can't Help It." Overall, this CD is one of the strongest recordings of Allen's music. ~ Scott Yanow

2 CD set. Urban Clifford Green known since childhood as Urbie was born in Mobile, Alabama, on August 8, 1926. The 1950s and 1960s were probably Urbie Green's most productive recording period. He moved to New York in 1953, and by the following year he established himself as one of the top trombonists in the nation's most competitive market. It was around this time that he took his first formal music lessons. Urbie worked with Benny Goodman off and on during 1955 57, appeared in the movie The Benny Goodman Story, and played with Count Basie in 1963. After the death of Tommy Dorsey, Urbie Green fronted the Tommy Dorsey ghost band 1966 67. During his long career, Urbie recorded along side some of the greatest figures in jazz, including Louis Armstrong, Charles Mingus, Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins and Ella Fitzgerald, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Wes Montgomery, Joe Morello and Jimmy Smith. He remained musically active until the 1980s. This release contains the complete initial recordings of the fabulous Urbie Green Big Band, covering the period from 1956 to 1959. It includes the complete original LPs All About Urbie Green, Let's Face the Music and Dance, Jimmy McHugh in Hi Fi & The Message which appeared many years after it was recorded. The last two albums appear here for the first time ever on CD.

Dizzy Gillespie was not only a great trumpet soloist -- he was also a skillful bandleader/arranger, and his bands (which ranged from small groups to larger ensembles) were an excellent training ground for a long list of musicians. One of them was pianist Mike Longo, who was in Gillespie's employ from 1966-1973 and went on to become a skillful bandleader himself. All of Longo's talents -- bandleader, arranger, pianist, composer -- are very much in evidence on Oasis, which reunites him with the New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble. This big-band date, which was recorded in 2004, often recalls Gillespie's work with larger ensembles. Gillespie, of course, was a major proponent of bop-oriented big bands -- he realized that even though bebop and hard bop were dominated by small groups, there was also a place for big bands in a bop setting. And that Gillespie influence asserts itself on Longo's own material as well as his arrangements of several well-known standards, including "Alone Together," "Lazy Afternoon," and Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Chega de Saudade (No More Blues)." Gillespie isn't Longo's only influence as a bandleader/arranger -- he's also well aware of Oliver Nelson and Thad Jones -- but Gillespie is certainly a prominent influence. Most of the tracks on this CD are instrumental, although Hilary Gardner (a pleasant, if derivative, vocalist) is featured on three tracks: Matt Dennis' "The Night We Called It a Day," George Gershwin's "Love Walked In," and Longo's thoughtful, Duke Ellington-inspired "Song of My Dream (For Duke)." Oasis never pretends to be groundbreaking -- certainly not by 2004 standards -- but it's an enjoyable, noteworthy effort that die-hard bop enthusiasts will appreciate. ~ Alex HendersonDown Beat
